How to reproof shell & down styles

Over time, the water-repellent finish on your shell or down garment wears off. You'll notice it when water stops beading on the surface and starts soaking into the outer fabric instead. When that happens, breathability drops and — for down styles — insulation takes a hit too. Reproofing brings it back.

As a rule of thumb, reproof after every 2–3 washes or after heavy use in wet conditions. Here's how.

How to reproof your garment

  • Close all zippers and fasten any Velcro closures. Empty all pockets.

  • Place the garment inside a Guppyfriend washing bag.

  • Wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle using a technical detergent. We recommend OrganoTex BioCare Sport Textile Wash. Do not use fabric softener — it damages the water-repellent finish and reduces breathability.

  • Dry the garment completely before reproofing. Shell styles can be air dried or tumble dried on low heat if the care label allows. Down styles should be tumble dried with dryer balls to regain its fullness.

  • Once fully dry, apply OrganoTex Spray-On Textile Waterproofing evenly to the outer fabric. Hold the bottle about 15–20 cm away and cover the entire surface. Don't spray the inside.

  • Let the garment dry completely. For best results, tumble dry on low heat for 10–15 minutes if the care label allows. Heat helps the treatment set.

Good to know

We recommend using a Guppyfriend washing bag every time you wash technical garments. It reduces microfibre shedding and protects the fabric during washing.

We use OrganoTex because it's free from PFCs and fluorocarbons, maintains breathability, and is readily biodegradable.

No compromise on performance, and a lighter footprint.

If you take good care of your garment, it will last season after season.
